Skincare routine + beauty products worth the splurge

January 21, 2019

I have spent most of my twenties being told I look like a 16 year old, to which I used to frown at, but now realize it’s not a bad thing. But I wasn’t blessed with perfect skin (just full cheeks) and lately I’ve been working on figuring out how to stay looking young for a long time. My cheeks and small nose can only do so much for me, and I know there will be a time when wrinkles will make their appearance, so I’m taking my skin care routine pretty seriously this year. There are quite a few things I’ve learned about my skin and the types of products I should invest in (and those I can just buy at the grocery store). I wanted to share a list of the products I like to splurge on and my reason for that, as well as the ones I think you can just buy cheap.

Morning routine

I choose to skip washing my face in the morning because I usually do it at night and I have noticed that my skin feels more dry when I wash it too often. Instead I use Clinique’s clarifying lotion to wipe away any dirt my skin might have picked up at night. This toner is really great for acne prone skin (mine) and will not make the skin feel too dry! After using the toner, I moisturize with Dr. Dennis Gross SPF moisturizer. I’ve been using this SPF for years and love it. I have tried a few different (cheap) SPF moisturizers that either break me out or feel too sticky, so I always splurge a little on this. It’s not breaking the bank, but it’s a little more expensive than other drugstore brands. I have also started using eye cream in the morning. I started with Cetaphil hydrating gel eye cream and have no complaints. Actually, I love it. It goes on smoothly and helps make my eyes look a lot less puffy! In fact, I’ve had a lot less people tell me I look tired in the morning, so it must be working! I continue with my light makeup routine after this, and truly I feel like my skin has been reacting positively. It’s the perfect combination for me at the moment and I’m happy I don’t have to spend a fortune.

Night routine

I like to start by removing any makeup I have on with a facial wipe. I don’t feel like I have to splurge on this because I don’t wear too much makeup, so pretty much any brand of facial wipes works. My favorites include Neutrogena,  Yes To Cucumber wipes, and even the Target brand Up&Up is great! I wash my face with the Boscia Black charcoal cleanser, which is absolutely worth the splurge. It has taken me years to find the perfect cleanser, so when I found this one and it worked for me when even other expensive cleansers weren’t doing the job, I was hooked. Another great cleanser is the Biore charcoal cleanser. I actually started using this and loved it before trying out the Boscia one, so I recommend this one if you’re not crazy about splurging on a cleanser (I will link all of these below!) After washing my face, I use the OLEHENRISKEN Glow20h dark spot toner, and then I apply the Sunday Riley Luna sleeping oil. Both of which I recommend splurging on. I have noticed so much change in the complexion and overall feel of my skin improve tremendously since I started using these products. I have also started using the Kheils avocado eye cream at night, which feels amazing on my skin. I know I won’t notice a change right away, but so far it feels great! I decided to splurge on my night time eye cream and get a cheaper one for the morning time. Honestly there’s no reason behind that decision other wanting to save a little on one of the eye creams. Lastly, depending on how my skin is doing, I like to top it all off with the Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment, which is supposed to work great with the Luna sleeping oil.

So to wrap things up, I like to splurge on beauty products that specifically help with concerns I personally have. I know it’s not the same for everyone, so splurging on a facial cleanser might not be ideal for you, but spending a little more on a good makeup remover is a must. I have listed my favorite products to splurge on as well as the ones I have used and loved that will not break the bank!
