Keeping things subtle with animal prints

September 28, 2018

Animal prints are in and are here to stay. Honestly, though, I feel like they’ve always had a place in my closet. I have a cheetah print oversized jacket/sweater, a few leopard & cheetah print shirts and even cheetah print pumps. I love how a good animal print piece can instantly spice up an outfit.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is not going overboard with prints. It’s easy to get carried away, or to end up looking like a Jersey Shore cast member (but if that’s what you’re going for, more power to ya!). I personally like to keep things simple, even when spicing up an outfit, so if that’s you, read on!

Go easy on the colors

The more colors you throw in the mix, the trickier it gets. BUT, don’t let that discourage you from going out of your comfort zone and trying something different. There are certain colors that tend to pop with certain animal prints. I love adding a red lip or red accessory to an outfit with cheetah print (like I did with this outfit). Other than that, I keep things super simple and stick to one color all throughout (like I did with this yellow set).

Pay attention to the fit

Ok, this is where your outfit can go down south (or should I say East) and immediately put you on the cast of Jersey Shore. If you’re wearing a leopard dress, for example, and it’s tight, maybe pair it with something a little more subtle, depending on your overall look. If you’re going for a casual look, pair it with booties and an oversized jean jacket or sweater. If you’re going for a flirty, night out look, be very strategic about your shoes. If you’re going with heels, stay away from anything too high, glittery, or with too much going on. Stick with thin, scrappy heels for a sexy look.

Accessorize with prints

As I said in the beginning, I have a few cheetah/animal print accessories that I like to keep handy. A belt, heels, scarf, to name a few, and I refuse to get rid of them because they’re always saving the day! I love adding the thin cheetah print belt to a plain outfit for a pop (like I did with the pink blouse), and same with the scarf in the winter!

I know I started talking about animal prints in general, but I realize I own more things with a cheetah print than any other! Either way, all of these tips can be applied to any animal print. I’m excited to add more things to my closet, specifically with a snake print!

Outfit details:

Blouse (thrifted, but find similar one here!) | Jeans | Calvin Klein Booties (sold out, similar here)  | Crossbody bag

As always, thank you so much for reading!
