Finding the perfect crop top

July 12, 2018

Let’s talk crop tops.

Can we agree they are definitely in right now? I mean, girls are basically making their own by cutting up old (and new) t-shirts. There are so many different types of crop tops, that I honestly can’t get enough! I’ve been wearing them all summer and I’m not sure I’ll slow it down too much when fall and winter hit. I might be cutting up my sweaters too… kidding. Anyway, I have to admit I wasn’t always a big fan of this trend. I’m not one to show too much skin, specially my stomach! I’ve always been shy, so much that I was probably one of the few girls in school that didn’t get her belly button pierced.. hah! Girls are not doing that anymore, right? Well all jokes aside, I can tell you that this shy girl has not changed much and still does not like showing skin, but that absolutely does not mean I won’t try a new trend. In this case, the crop tops. I want to share some tips I’ve found useful when shopping for crop tops and of course details of my current favorites!

The other day I found this top at Urban Outfitters and immediately knew I could pair it with high waisted jeans. I was totally right! When shopping for crop tops, the first thing I ask myself is, what will I wear this top with? Do I already have the bottoms or am I now looking for that too? If I don’t already have something in my closet that I can immediately think of to pair with the top, I leave it. I’ve bought one too many tops that I think will look cute with anything, only to find out that I was totally wrong! It’s even worse when I can’t return them. A total nightmare.

That was tip #1, by the way. Tip #2 has to do with the length of the top. Think about what you’re working with.. as in your breast area, and waist. I personally don’t have much to work with (which is actually not a bad thing when looking for crop tops), so I pay attention to the design. Tops with ruffles are great for taking the attention away from the breast in general. I’ve also found that the longer the top, the easier it is to pair with most bottoms. Unless, like I mentioned earlier, you have a good idea of what you’re wearing the top with.

Lastly, consider the undergarment you’re planning on wearing with the top, if any at all. The trend I’m seeing all around is braless, and I have to admit I’m on that bandwagon as well. Some crop tops just don’t look good with bras, even the strapless. If you’re not ready to go bare, try the adhesive backless bras (like this one)! They sell them at Target, Amazon and most department stores. This is what I would do before I went out braless for the first time.. I still remember that day. haha!

Alright.. I guess I have one more tip.. make a button down into a “crop top” by tying a knot in the front.. like I did with this one. I actually don’t see myself wearing the shirt any other way. This is a great way to ease into the trend if you’re not ready to wear a tiny shirt.

I hope these tips were a bit helpful! Be patient when shopping for these, and try to invest in a good crop top. I promise quality makes all the difference. Even though I have a small chest area, I’m not a size 0, so usually the cheap crop tops at forever 21 lead to pure disappointment. Just wanted to make a note of that! 🙂
