Comfy is the new black: How to wear sneakers with (almost) anything

May 9, 2018

Actually, comfy is always in for me. I love being comfortable as much as I love wearing heels and I don’t think I’m alone. I’ve noticed recently that it’s not weird to see a cute dress or skirt worn with sneakers. Or a work outfit with sneakers. The trick is in how you make the opposites, if you will, attract. Trust me, they don’t always attract. It takes the right amount of dressy at the top to match a worn out pair of sneakers. So, read on as I hope to shine a light on how to do this right.

Wearing sneakers to work

This is definitely tricky and maybe totally impossible for some of you, depending on your workplace. If you have a somewhat laid back office setting or a really cool boss, I’m sure you can pull off a cool sneaker look on casual Friday. But I imagine you already knew that, right? The fun is in figuring out how to wear sneakers with work clothes, and again it all depends on where you work. It also depends a lot on what you’re doing on that particular day. I, for example, have casual days that I know I will spend mainly in the classroom. Other days, however, are filled with meetings that require me to look totally professional. Choosing the right sneakers for work is probably the most important thing to consider. You need to ask yourself “what is the shoe saying about me?” I’m so serious. Is it saying “I’m going to the gym after work and don’t want to have to change out of these shoes later” or are they saying “I carefully but effortlessly picked these sneakers to go with what I’m wearing”. I’ve linked a few favorites here that I personally think are good for work.

Sneakers & dresses/skirts

This can go really well or really wrong. Really wrong as in looking like a teenage girl that didn’t want to wear heels with her Quincenera or sweet 16 party dress so she opted for chucks. Nothing wrong with that… but is that what you want? Wearing sneakers to special occasions is a no for me, but that’s my personal opinion. Wearing sneakers with a t-shirt dress or a flirty skirt is a totally a yes. Keep in mind that sneakers are casual footwear and you can only go so far with how dressy your top part is. Pay attention to the material of the dress/skirt. Does it look like a prom dress or something you would wear to the opera? Is it velvet, sequin, or satin? Or is it a dress you would wear to brunch or to the mall? Maybe the fabric is denim, cotton or knit. These are usually the perfect fit to wear with sneakers. I’ve linked my current favorites below!

In conclusion, when introducing casual sneakers to your wardrobe, you have several options. You might want to start with a more affordable option if you’re experimenting and aren’t sure if this style will suit you. But if you’re willing to splurge, there are several options that are totally worth it (see the ones I linked!)
